Daniel Boone Country at a Glance
Daniel Boone Country in southeastern Kentucky
is centered around Daniel
Boone National Forest, a vast recreation area endowed with three large fishing
lakes, two scenic byways, numerous campgrounds and over 600 mi (966 km) of hiking
trails. Additional recreational opportunities are available at Jefferson
National Forest in Virginia,
which hugs the region's eastern border. A must-see attraction in the area is Cumberland
Gap National Historic Park, where a major break in the Appalachian mountains
at the confluence of the Kentucky, Tennessee
and Virginia borders marked a significant historical passageway for American Indians
and early settlers. The park features a visitor center museum and movie theater,
an array of recreational activities and ranger-guided tours. Benham
is home to the Kentucky
Coal Mining Museum, where visitors can take a walking tour of an underground
mine. The entertainment headquarters for the area, Renfro
Valley Entertainment Center offers live performances, festivals, concerts
and many amenities, such as shops, restaurants, lodging and an RV park.
